There is increasing evidence that yoga and mindfulness meditation are effective adjunct therapies for anxiety and depression.
- Meditation experience is associated with increased cortical thickness
- Rapid stress reduction and anxiolysis among distressed women as a consequence of a three-month intensive yoga program
- Initial Evaluation of the LifeForce Yoga Program as a Therapeutic Intervention for Depression
- Yoga for Treatment of Anxiety and Depression
Individual sessions of yoga therapy for women who struggle with anxiety, depression or trauma, begin with a thorough assessment. After discussing your life history and current concerns, we develop a flexible individualized practice that will help you find a new balance of strength, peacefulness and energy. I utilize breath work, asana or meditation in movement, and guided relaxation and visualization. Over time, clients practice confidently at home and have a safe and effective way of supporting themselves in times of stress. This is a holistic treatment that can be combined with or take the place of medication. Any adjustments in medication are done in consultation with the prescribing healthcare provider. Sessions are 60-90 minutes long to give ample time for talking, yoga practice and integration of the session. Most women benefit from 4-6 sessions and then follow-up as needed. This is an empowering experience and leaves women feeling a new sense of confidence in their ability to care for themselves.
Alison has also developed a program called The Yoga of Parenting. Information and dates for workshops can be found at: The Yoga of Parenting or at www.yomamaboulder.com.
